Ellen Page Hangs Out With Stonewall Riots Veteran Miss Major

"Beyond grateful and humbled to have just met Miss Major."

Maybe it's because she's a newly out celebrity, or maybe it's because she's about to play a lesbian in Freeheld, but Ellen Page is definitely upping her social justice game.

Just days after confronting Ted Cruz at the Iowa State Fair about his appalling stance on LGBT rights, Page posted an Instagram pic with Miss Major Griffin-Gracy, a longtime trans advocate who was at the Stonewall riots.

"Beyond grateful and humbled to have just met Miss Major," wrote Page. "Such a brave and courageous woman who has been an activist fighting for trans rights since the 60s. I am fortunate for the opportunity to meet and learn from such an inspiring woman."

Miss Major Griffin-Gracy has been a community leader for trans rights and trans women of color for decades. She is the executive director for the Transgender GenderVariant Intersex Justice Project, which aims to assist trans people in the prison system.

Of the 1969 Stonewall riots, Griffin-Gracy said many New York gay bars would deny entry to trans people—afraid of drawing undue police attention—but the Stonewall was more welcoming.

"We could go to Stonewall and everything would be fine, we didn't have to explain ourselves."

In Freeheld, Page plays the partner of a police officer (Julianne Moore) who is dying of cancer and unable secure benefits for Page after her death. It opens in limited theaters on October 2.

Last month, Page was in Jamaica and helped celebrate the island nation's first Pride celebration.
