Every issue of Elska magazine checks in with gay men in a different city. The new issue, out now, sees editor-publisher Liam Campbell in Cardiff, capital of Wales.
Campbell has covered cities like Istanbul and Taipei, where gay life is less liberated, but Cardiff has a rich—though often overlooked—queer community.
“It’s important to me to do issues all over the world, including cities that aren’t very gay-friendly,” he tells NewNowNext. “But doing the project in such an open and welcoming place like Cardiff was a real treat.”
“The amount of guys coming forward to participate was immense… When you get straight lads wanting to be in a mag that is so tied to the gay community, it’s a real sign of how we’ve come together.”
“Instead of having to literally warn the guys that their pictures may be plastered across gay media worldwide,” he explains, “here it wasn’t even an issue.”
Campbell says that spirit of openness extends beyond sexuality.
“It can be a struggle convincing men that they’re ‘worthy’, that you don’t have to be a supermodel or porn star to be photographed. The Cardiffians were up for anything. We’ve got fit guys, skinny guys and big guys, and an age range that went from 19 to 75.”
