Elton John Surprises "Lion King" Audience With Live Performance Of "The Circle Of Life"

The Tony-winning musical is celebrating its 20th anniversary this month.

Our county is reeling from yet another senseless mass shooting, but there's still hope, still love, and still magic: Last night The Lion King celebrated 20 years on Broadway and theatergoers were treated to a surprise performance of "The Circle of Life" by Sir Elton John himself.

Following the curtain call, the out legend played the piano and led the cast in a heartfelt rendition of the Oscar-nominated song. Joining them at the Minskoff Theatre were director-designer Julie Taymor, the show's creative team, and several members of Disney Theatrical Productions.

Disney on Broadway

The Lion King opened at the New Amsterdam on November 13, 1997, earning six Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Costumes and Best Direction for Taymor. It moved to the Minskoff in 2006.

Last week Disney announced a new live-action/CGI version of The Lion King, with Donald Glover as Simba, James Earl Jones as Mufasa, Beyoncé as Nala, Seth Rogen and Billy Eichner as Pumbaa and Timon, and Chiwetel Ejiofor as Scar.

John, who also worked on the scores for Billy Elliot and Aida is working on a musical adaptation of The Devil Wears Prada.
