Elton John Biopic "Rocketman" Being Turned Into Broadway Musical: Theater

The rumors are true: Taye Diggs has been confirmed for Hedwig, starting July 22. He'll be the first African-American to take the role when he takes over for Darren Criss, as the "internationally ignored" East German rocker, joining Rebecca Naomi Jones as Yitzhak.

The Tonys are just two weeks away, and the first batch of in-show performances have been announced: Kristin Chenoweth, Chita Rivera, Christian Borle  will perform from their nominated shows.

We'll also see numbers from some snubbed shows, including Gigi with Vanessa Hudgens, Finding Neverland with Matthew Morrison and Kelsey Grammer, and Tyne Daly and the cast of It Shoulda Been You.

Phantom II, Coming to You

As we previously reported, a number of new Broadway shows have already lined up tours. This week, Best Musical contenders Fun Home and Something Rotten! announced national tours, making On the 20th Century, The Visit and Gigi the only nominated musicals with no road shows plans.

Also, the Phantom sequel, Love Never Dies, is set to tour North America,  even though its original Broadway run was "indefinitely postponed" in 2011.

In other news, high-grossing musical An American in Paris is now selling tickets through April 2016. To put that in perspective, The Book of Mormon in being sold through January.


Bernadette And Kristin Hit The Road

Not only is she readying to co-host the Tonys will Alan Cumming, but Kristin Chenoweth has concert dates booked through next May. Launching August 8 in Park City, Utah, her tour stop in L.A., Chicago, Atlanta and Nashville. (For complete tour dates, click here.)

And speaking of musical theater goddesses, Bernadette Peters (Into the Woods, A Little Night Music) is continuing her concert tour through the spring with dates in Provincetown, Omaha, Newark and Costa Mesa, CA. (For tickets and additional cities, click here.)


Elton John Musical Rockets To Broadway

The Elton John biopic Rocketman, which sees Mad Max actor Tom Hardy playing the out music legend, hasn't hit theaters yet—but a stage musical based on the film is already in the pipeline.

With Billy Elliot playwright pitching in on the script, the Rocketman musical would feature songs from John's extensive songbook.

It's expected to debut on Broadway prior to a West End bow, but no stars have been tapped.
