Game Of Thrones, American Horror Story Lead Emmy Nominations, Orphan Black Snubbed

game of thrones season 4 trailer

Nominations for the 66th annual Primetime Emmy Awards were announced this morning and genre favorites Game of Thrones and American Horror Story: Coven lead the pack. Thrones landed the most nominations WITH 19—including Best Drama. The third cycle of Ryan Murphy’s horror anthology series scored 17 nods.

The freshman series Fargo, an adaptation of the Coen Brothes film, was a surprise winner with 18 noms, including two for Billy Bob Thorton and Martin Freeman in Lead Actor in a Miniseries.

Other less-surprising nominations include Breaking Bad, True Detectives Downton Abbey, Mad Men House of Cards and Modern Family, which now has a chance to tie for most Best Comedy Series wins. (The record,  five, is currently held by NBC’s Frasier.)

The Normal Heart_ Tease (HBO Films) 000034;12Of interest to LGBT viewers, HBO’s acclaimed adaptation of The Normal Heart was nominated for Best Movie, with lead Mark Ruffalo (left) scoring a nod as well.

Orange is the New Black landed a nod for Best Comedy—with Laverne Cox becoming the first trans actress nominated for an Emmy.

Andre Braugher, who plays gay police chief Ray Holt on Fox’s Brooklyn Nine-Nine, scored a Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy nom. And out actors Jim Parsons (Normal Heart, The Big Bang Theory), Kate McKinnon (SNL), Nathan Lane (Modern Family), Jane Lynch (Hollywood Game Night), Matt Bomer (Normal Heart), Sarah Paulson (American Horror Story) Joe Mantello (Normal Heart) and Jesse Tyler Ferguson (Modern Family) all received nominations, as well.

There were, of course, some upsets—Orphan Black’s Tatiana Maslany was a critics favorite for Lead Actress in a Drama Series but got not love. And, once again, RuPaul’s Drag Race was snubbed in the Reality Competition category.

The 66th Annual Primetime Emmys air Aug. 25 on NBC.
