Rachel McAdams’ IMPACT!
The iconic and campy Eurovision Song Contest was canceled this year, but in 2021 the annual iconic competition will be back—and it will also be crossing the Atlantic Ocean. Martin Österdahl, Executive Supervisor of the Eurovision Song Contest, announced that the U.S. would be getting its own version of Eurovision, renamed The American Song Contest.
“The Eurovision Song Contest’s unique legacy dates back 65 years and its worldwide popularity is still rising. It’s time for America to experience this spectacle, through its sister competition, the American Song Contest,” Österdahl said in a statement. “Love of music is universal and celebration of music in different genres and styles can transcend boundaries and unite people. We are excited to have found the right partners to offer another series that our fans across the globe can fall in love with and to share this unique competition with the American people.”
As Variety reports, The American Song Contest will remain similar to Eurovision, where “professional musical artists—solo singers, duos or groups up to six members—from each of the 50 states and across every musical genre will perform all original songs on the live televised event.”
The states’ representatives will then face off in a series of televised Qualifier Competitions, leading to Semi-Finals and the ultimate primetime Grand Final.
“When America is more fractionalized than ever and we are dealing with so many issues that divide us, the one [thing] that truly unites us is our culture,” said executive producer Ben Silverman. “It can unite it by celebrating its diversity, its distinctions and in pulling everyone around its love of music and its love of song.”
Even though Eurovision was canceled this year due to the coronavirus pandemic the show found a new audience with the Netflix original movie, Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga starring Will Ferrel and Rachel McAdams, which hit the streaming service back in May.
We’re excited for an Ameican version of Eurovision, but we somehow don’t think the camptastic elements of the international version will stay once it hits U.S. shores.
The American Song Contest is set to debut during the 2021 holiday season.
