Evander Holyfield, onetime U.S. heavyweight boxing champ, declared homosexuality “ain’t normal” and is “a choice” on UK Celebrity Big Brother Sunday night.
It was Holyfield ’s his first week in the BB house, and reality star Luisa Zissman asked him if there were any openly gay boxers. The 51-year-old declared, “Ain’t no-one came out and said they were” (guess he doesn’t know about Orlando Cruz) and Zissman lamented that no one had come forward.
“What would be good about it? That ain’t normal,” Holyfield responded, before declaring the Bible lets us know what’s right and wrong. “It is a choice, come on,” he added. “That ain’t the way nobody is made.”
Zissman tries to steer the conversation elsewhere, but Holyfield continues and compares homosexuality to a handicap. “If you were born and your leg were turned this way, what do you do, you go to the doctor and get it fixed back right.”
Later, Holyfield was taken to a private room by Big Brother producers, who told the boxer his comments were “inappropriate” and “aren’t the views that are held by a large section of society.” Holyfield said he understood his comments were “extremely offensive to many people,” but didn’t apologize. He and Zissman were later put up for eviction.
