Facebook Adds Write-In-Your-Own-Gender Field
"We recognize that some people face challenges sharing their true gender identity with others, and this setting gives people the ability to express themselves in an authentic way." the social-media giant said in a statement.
The DIY option is now available to all users of Facebook in US English.
“By empowering people to talk about their gender in their own words, Facebook continues to be a leader in its commitment to respecting and protecting LGBT users,” said GLAAD president Sarah Kate Ellis. “Part of being who you are is just being able to describe yourself in a way that feels right to you.”
With GLAAD's assistance, Last year Facebook expanded its offerings to some 56 gender options, and began to allow users to indicate preferred pronouns and adjust privacy settings for the custom gender field.
