"Fallout 4" Is Coming—But Will It Live Up To The Game's Gay Legacy?

Did you hear an excited squeal coming from the direction of your friendly neighborhood gamer? That was probably because Fallout 4 is finally coming out in time for Christmas.

The Fallout series has a special place in the history of gay games: Back in 1998, it was the first major release to feature same-sex marriage, thanks to a farmer who forced users into a shotgun wedding after you spent a night with his daughter—or son.

Fallout 3 was more subtle about sexuality, but included two gay couples among its non-playable characters (NPCs): weapons merchants Flak and Shrapnel, and ghoulish innkeepers Carol and Greta.

The follow up game, Fallout: New Vegas, got much queerer: Thanks to new player options like "Confirmed Bachelor" and "Cherchez La Femme" you could finally designate your character as gay or lesbian.

Some characters in New Vegas also reveal themselves to be gay during gameplay, including Arcade, Cass and Veronica. They aren't the only LGBT characters you might meet in the game, either.

Hitting stores in November, Fallout 4 will take place in the ruins of Boston, where your character is a survivor of a global nuclear holocaust.

The Collector's Edition will also include an actual Pip Boy (Personal Information Processor)—sort of a fitbit/watch/tablet on steroids—you can wear on your wrist like Fallout protagonists do. You can stick your smartphone in and mimic the Pip Boy interface—which might just make this the must-have gaymer accessory of the season.

The downside? Thanks to a preview of the game's character-creation system, we know players start the game with an opposite-sex spouse and baby. So it seems unlikely gaymers will be able to make the main character reflect their sexual orientation. (But, who knows for sure.)

Will there be other ways Fallout 4 can make gaymers feel like they have a place at the table? We'll definitely be picking this one up in November to see.
