"Smash" Producer Josh Safran Is Bringing "Fame" Back To TV For Lifetime

Lifetime channel has officially greenlighted a reboot of the 1980s TV series Fame, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Penning the show will be out showrunner Josh Safran,  an executive producer on Gossip Girl and showrunner during the second season of Smash.

The plot will remain the same: A group of talented teens face the up and downs of attending the prestigious New York High School of the Performing Arts, all expressed in a smattering of musical and dance numbers.

First airing in 1982, the original series ran for six seasons with Debbie Allen as the school's dance instructor. Supporting players during the show's seven year run included a young Janet Jackson and Fun Home Tony winner Michael Cerveris.

Fame has previously been into an off-Broadway musical and rebooted for TV 2009. That show was a total flopzilla, so here's hoping Safran can bring on the magic of his other addictive shows.
