Egyptian Censors Demand Nude Scene Be Cut From Gay Film "Family Secrets"

Family Secrets is being billed as "the first Egyptian film about homosexuality" but its already facing censorship by the conservative country's film board.

Directed by first-time helmer Hany Fawzy, Secrets explores a young Egyptian man's (Mohammad Mahran) struggle "family and community over the issue of his sexuality." State censors have insisted on 13 scenes being cut from the film to secure the equivalent of an R rating, including one with the protagonist naked in bed with his male English tutor.

Fawzy and his production company Al Amal Film Production are standing their ground, though, and have rejected the revisions.

Family Secrets is set to screen at the Dubai International Film Festival this week, apparently despite the fact that homosexuality is illegal in the United Arab Emirates.
