"Family Values" Republican Resigns After Being Caught Having Sex With A Man In His Office

"I sincerely regret that my actions and choices have kept me from serving my constituents," said Ohio State Rep. Wes Goodman.

An Ohio lawmaker has stepped down after being confronted with evidence he had sexual relations with another man in his office. State Rep. Wes Goodman (R-Cardington), a married "family values" Republican, has previous claimed “healthy, vibrant, thriving, values-driven families are the source of Ohio’s proud history."

Several GOP insiders claim there is video of the encounter, which was by all accounts consensual.

“I was alerted to details yesterday afternoon regarding his involvement in inappropriate behavior related to his state office,” House Speaker Cliff Rosenberger (R-Clarksville) said in a statement. “I met with him later in the day where he acknowledged and confirmed the allegations. It became clear that his resignation was the most appropriate course of action for him, his family, the constituents of the 87th House District and this institution.”

While no charges of sexual harassment have been levied against Goodman, 33, someone who knew of or witnessed the encounter informed House Chief of Staff Mike Dittoe.

The Columbus Dispatch reports rumors about Goodman's conduct have been swirling for some time, "and include stories dating back years to when he worked in Washington." Goodman's Facebook account and campaign website have been taken offline and his Twitter account made private. (His Twitter bio describes him as "Christian. American. Conservative. Republican. Husband."

“We all bring our own struggles and our own trials into public life. That has been true for me, and I sincerely regret that my actions and choices have kept me from serving my constituents and our state in a way that reflects the best ideals of public service,” Goodman said in a statement. “For those whom I have let down, I’m sorry. As I move onto the next chapter of my life, I sincerely ask for privacy for myself, my family, and my friends.”

Goodman touted religious liberty and voted to repeal Obamacare in Ohio. He also authored the "Enact Campus Free Speech Act," to ensure speakers were allowed to speak on college campuses regardless of how odious their perspective.

His departure is just the latest resignation in Columbus: State Senator Cliff Hite (R-Findlay) resigned from the state legislature less than a month ago, following a complaint of sexual harassment filed by a female staffer. Just this week, Mike Premo, the chief of staff for Ohio Senate Democrats, stepped down after allegations of inappropriate behavior by a female staffer.

“Both the House and the Senate are sending a pretty clear message that inappropriate behavior won’t be tolerated,” Obhof said. “If you engage in that, there will be swift action and it will be decisive.”
