A new FBI report reveals hate crimes against the LGBT community are on the rise, particularly against transgender people.

Compiling data from more than 15,000 law enforcement agencies around the country, the Bureau's 2016 Hate Crimes and Statistics report, indicates there were 6,121 hate crimes in all 2016—an increase of 5% from 2015.

Of the single-bias incidents, of which there were 6,063, 1,076 (17.7%) were motivated by sexual orientation, a 2% increase from 2015. Additionally, 124 incidents (2%) were motivated by the victim's real or perceived gender identity.

The report differentiated between crimes against trans Americans and those who are gender-nonconforming: Anti-trans crimes increased from 73 to 105 between 2015 and 2016, a jump of nearly 43%. (Crimes against gender-nonconforming Americans actually decreased year-to-year.)

In reality, the numbers for all categories are likely higher, as not all jurisdictions include sexual orientation or gender identity in hate crime statistics.

The FBI's data echoed numerous other reports pointing to a crisis in anti-transgender violence in America: This year to date, at least 25 trans Americans have been murdered, surpassing the 23 victims in 2016 more than month before the end of the year.

According the FBI's standards, victims of hate crimes can be individuals, businesses, government entities, religious organizations, or society as whole, and can be committed against persons, property, or society.
