FDA Approves New Combination Drug To Combat HIV

Descovy is reportedly as efficient in treating HIV as Viread, but at one-tenth the dose.

The FDA has approved a new combination drug to treat HIV.

Developed by Gilead Sciences, Descovy includes two medications that already have been approved for treating the virus, and is reportedly as effective as another popular medication, Viread, but at a much lower dose.

"As the first new HIV treatment backbone approved by the FDA in more than a decade, Descovy represents an important evolution in HIV care. As part of a single tablet regimen or partnered with a third agent, [it] offer patients a simple and effective combination with a safety profile that has the potential to improve health," said Norbert Bischofberger, Executive Vice President of Research and Development at Gilead.

Descovy will carry strong precautions about possible side effects, including kidney damage, issues with the immune system, lactic acid buildup and worsening of hepatitis B.

It's been approved for patients 12 and older.
