Federal Judge Sends Defiant Clerk Kim Davis To Jail

Davis said "Thank you" to U.S. District Judge David Bunning before being escorted out of the courtroom.

Kim Davis, the Kentucky clerk who has refused to grant marriage licenses to same-sex couples, had her day in court today—and now she's going to jail.

U.S. District Judge David Bunning told Davis she would be jailed on contempt of court charges until she complied with his order to issue marriage licenses to all eligible couples. Davis said "Thank you" before being escorted out of the courtroom by a U.S. marshal.

The 49-year-old clerk has refused to issue marriages licenses since the Supreme Court legalized marriage equality in June, and refused to allow anyone in her office to, as the forms bear her signature.

Outside, hundreds of protesters on both sides of the issue amassed outside the Rowan County courthouse. This morning, a small plane flew over the building carrying a banner that read "Stand Firm Kim."

The couples suing Davis sked Bunning to levy fines against Davis, not jail time. Now, reactionary right-wingers will no doubt paint her as their own Nelson Mandela.
