Fierce New Female Super Squad Fights "For Those Told Their Tears Don’t Matter"

Meet Bionica, Flare, Pao Pao and Dazzle.

"In the dark shadows of the night where women’s screams were unheard, and evil crept silently through back alleyways and hidden streets, four superheroes emerge to fight injustice and crime against women..."

So starts the backstory for Bionica, Flare, Pao Pao and Dazzle—a group of fierce femmes who protect New York from the forces of evil.

Now a series of photos of this female force is going viral, thanks to the work of lifestyle blogger/designer Paola Mathe.

The idea came to her like a bolt from the blue one day while taking a shower.

"I love to create stories in the shower," she says on her blog, Finding Paola. "A lot of them get lost in my mind once I step out of the bathroom into the real world. Or I get embarrassed about them and choose not to share them with others. But this one came to stay."

Mathe tapped three friends—Kristia, Nichole and Cacsmy—to join her.

"I told them I wanted to be a superhero, but I didn’t want to be alone and I needed their help. I had a whole story, and the more I thought about it, the clearer it came. They all immediately agreed to join me in my superhero adventure."

To get their look, Mathe worked with a designer friend, pairing custom stretch leather leggings with American Apparel bodysuits, and an assortment of belts, gloves and harnesses.

The results both reveal the body and convey a message of power.

"I like to display how strong women are in pretty much anything," she says. "Fanm Djanm focuses on... African-inspired fashion and headwraps, but I wanted this to focus on the modern black woman in today’s world—and to make it fun, I wanted us to have super powers!"

Once they had the look down, it was up to NYC_Underground photographer Aaron Pegg to bring the concept to life, shooting the fierce femmes at the Hudson Yards subway station.

Matthe says her team's mission is to defend those who are preyed upon.

We fight for those who are told their tears don’t matter. Where the police hurts more than serves, and eating establishments are built just to shorten the lives of the community.

We fight for the strong who have been stripped of their powers. We fight for the invisible.
