Fire Island's Grove Hotel Set To Reopen This Summer

"The decision to rebuild was not difficult."

The Grove Hotel has welcomed guests to Fire Island's Cherry Grove for more than 50 years. But on March 27, 2015, a massive fire ripped through the resort and, despite fire fighters' best efforts, the hotel—the largest on Fire Island—was lost. (The Ice Palace, the nightclub attached to the hotel, suffered only minor damage.)

“I’m heartbroken. We love this place," owner Frank Liguori told CBS 2 New York. We would love to rebuild as soon as possible.”

With cleanup complete and a new design in hand, construction began in September.

Grove Hotel

"The decision to rebuild was not difficult," Robert Lassegue, bar manager and entertainment director for the Ice Palace, tells NewNowNext. "The community, our customers, are very excited to have the return of this Fire Island landmark. [It has helped] make Cherry Grove and The Pines a destination place for the LGBT community."

There will be some changes: The new Grove Hotel will be larger than its predecessor, with more spacious guest rooms. Juliet balconies will be added to those rooms facing the pool, and wifi will be available throughout the resort.

What will stay the same?

"We will have our returning shows," added Lassegue. "Ariel Sinclair, Logan Hardcore, Porsche, Lavinia Draper, Sonny Shores, the Sunday Variety Show and Daniel Nardicio's underwear party." On September 9, the palace will once again play host to Miss Fire Island, a popular season-ender.

Right now, the plan is to reopen on May 5. The hotel is not currently taking reservations, but guests can register online for updates and other details.
