Fire Island Opera Festival Brings An Air Of Class, And Sexiness, To The Party: PHOTOS
We usually think of Fire Island Pines as a mecca for anything-goes naught summer fun. And it is—but it can also be a haven for high culture, like the venerable Fire Island Dance Festival. This summer, from August 23 to 25, the Pines welcomed talented tenors and amazing altos for the first-ever Fire Island Opera Festival,
“We went to the Dance Festival last year, and it got us thinking about why there isn’t more for artists and theater on the island,” director Edwin Cahill told Passport. “This community is full of talented, creative people who are interested in the arts, and we wanted to give them something completely over-the-top and different to experience, something we could do year after year.”
Performances included Bon Appétit, Lee Hoiby's "comic, culinary, extravaganza" that sees Julia Child trilling her way through a recipe for chocolate cake, and the audience tasting the results at intermission, and L’Arbre Enchanté (The Magic Tree), Christoph Willibald Ritter von Gluck's comic opera last performed at Versailles in 1775 for Marie-Antoinette. In its "New World" premiere, the work has been adapted into English and tells the tale of two men—one a rich businessman with a fabulous mansion, the other a penniless but hot pool boy—fighting for the love of a beautiful young man.
So you can just forget about any fat ladies singing.
