First Look At "Stranger Things" Star David Harbour As Super-Buff Hellboy

Talk about a bod from hell.

David Harbour first caught our attention as scruffy dad-bodied police chief Jim Hopper in Stranger Things, but the 42-year-old actor has apparently buffed up to play Hellboy in an upcoming movie reboot, which started filming this month in England and Bulgaria.

Harbour revealed it took him just two months of intense workouts with trainer Don Saladino to be reborn as the oft-shirtless demon creature. "We didn't want, like, Abercrombie," Saladino, who also trained Ryan Reynolds for Deadpool, told Esquire. "You needed to look scary."

To achieve that look, the duo focused on power and strength training, especially dead lifts, kettlebell walks, dumbbell lifts, and butterflies.

Before they started training, Harbour told Saladino, "I’d like to discover that I have abs! Even if those abs are a bit fleshy. I’d like to look like I could hold my own in a ring with a heavyweight."

We'd say mission accomplished!

Ron Perlman played the demonic do-gooder in two movies directed by Guillermo del Toro, and some fans are griping that a new actor has taken up the role. But Perlman has given Harbour his blessing. The new film, directed Neil Marshall (The Descent, Game of Thrones) also stars Ian McShane, Milla Jovovich, Sasha Lane and Daniel Dae Kim.

Dark Horse Comics

As recounted in the Dark House comics, Hellboy was summoned from the depths of hell by Nazis during WWII, but became something of a hero under the tutelage of Professor Trevor Bruttenholm (McShane) and the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense.

In Marshall's film, he must defeat the Blood Queen Nimue, a former consort of Merlin, in a battle that threatens to bring about the end of the world.

Hellboy is expected to hit theaters in 2019.
