First Same-Sex Couple Married In Colombia Broadcasts Their Ceremony Live

Congratulations, guys!

The first same-sex couple to legally marry in Colombia signed their marriage certificate together in the city of Cali on Tuesday, marking an official end to years of uncertainty surrounding the status of same-sex couples registered as partners in the South American country.

The historic day comes less than a month after the Colombian Constitutional Court ruled that same-sex Colombian couples have the right to marry.

As we previously reported, couples began registering themselves with the government as partners in 2013, when a court-mandated deadline for lawmakers to issue equal benefits to same-sex couples expired. According to The Washington Blade, those couples currently registered as "solemn unions" are now considered legally married under Colombian law.

Local news outlet El Pais broadcast video of the full ceremony live on Facebook. The couple, Fernando and Jose Ticora Quimbayo, celebrated the historic moment by posing for photographers and giving a Spanish-language interview.
