Moonlight made Academy Awards history on Sunday when it won Best Picture, the first film addressing the LGBT experience to do so. The award validates generations of queer storytelling in film, especially for people of color. Barry Jenkins and Tarell Alvin McCraney crafted the story through their own lived experiences, and if we want to see more films that portray LGBT stories, we need to give writers the tools to take their experiences from page to screen.

That’s why you should donate to GLAAD: The nonprofit focuses on helping to foster LGBT narratives with accuracy and sensitivity. As major studios and television networks write more diverse characters, they rely on GLAAD liaisons in the writers’ room to capture the authentic queer experience. Support their work, and more films like Moonlight could end up taking home Oscar gold. To donate, go to GLAAD.org.

The Oscars always features inspiring speeches, but one of Sunday's best was nearly overlooked: As out lyricist Benj Pasek accepted his award for Best Original Song for La La Land's "City of Stars," he thanked his mother, because she “let me quit the soccer league to be in the school musical."

His award, he said, was dedicated "to all the kids who sing in the rain and all the moms who let them.”

For many LGBT and questioning kids, school plays and community theater are a refuge for self-expression. Sadly, the Trump administration has shown itself to be no friend to the arts, and is threatening to defund the National Endowment for the Arts.

That’s why you should take five minutes to explore the American Association of Community Theatre’s website. It provides ample materials on participating in or starting your own community theater. If that's too much of a commitment, simply check out their list of state or regional theater associations and see how you can volunteer.

Help keep theater and the arts a safe space for curious kids, and who knows—they may one day see Oscar gold themselves.
