10 Must-See Movies At Outfest, L.A.'s LGBT Film Festival

Outfest, L.A.'s legendary LGBT film festival, unspools July 10 to 20, promising a diverse roster of must-see features, documentaries and shorts. Even if you can't make it to the City of Angels for the festival, though, many of these films will wind up in theaters, fests, and Netflix queues near you.

Below, we pick 10 Outfest flicks you won't want to miss.


Boulevard

Robin Williams plays Nolan, a middle-aged married man who upsets his mundane existence and faces his repressed sexuality by picking up a hustler on the streets of Nashville. Instead of paying him for sex, though, Nolan takes Leo (Roberto Aguiler) to dinner and engages him in conversation.


Space Station 76

One of Outfest's campiest offerings is a sendup of classic sci-fi and disaster flicks, starring Patrick Wilson as a closeted space captain, Matt Bomer as a mechanic with marriage troubles and Liv Tyler as the perky new arrival.


Match

A Seattle couple (Carla Gugino and Matthew Lillard) travel to New York to interview retired dancer Tobi (Patrick Stewart) , but the conversation turns from choreography to sexuality, as Tobi reveals his past as a swinger with scores of both male and female lovers.

Quick Change

Manila's underground trans community puts a premium on beauty—and for many, former pageant queen Dorina Pineda (Mimi Juareza) is the only hope for affordable cosmetic surgery. But she isn't a real doctor and, when a client dies, Dorina is forced to weigh supporting her eight-year-old nephew and boyfriend against the dangers of illicit profession.

Lilting

Life Partners

Community's Gillian Jacobs and Gossip Girl's Leighton Meester star as codependent friends in this marriage equality comedy:  Paige (Jacobs), who is straight, has promised not to get married until lesbian Sasha (Meester) has the same legal right. But will friendship and politics win out when Paige meets Mr. Right (played by Meester's real-life husband Adam Brody)?


X/Y

Sylvia and Mark (real-life couple America Ferrera and Ryan Piers Williams) split up and look for new love. But while Sylvia tries to make sense of her feelings for a co-worker (Common), Mark gets into a relationship with his bisexual friend Jake (Jon Paul Phillips).

Jamie Marks is Dead

Out in the Night

Blair Dorosh-Walther‘s documentary explores the fates of seven African-American lesbians who were sent to prison after fending off a bias attack in Greenwich Village.

Longtime Companion

This year, Outfest celebrates the 25th anniversary of Longtime Companion, one of the first mainstream movies to address the AIDS crisis. Members of the cast and crew will be in attendance at this special screening, including Bruce Davison, who won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his performance as a gay New Yorker struck down by the virus.
