A fiercely talented baton twirler has become a local celebrity in Monroeville, Pennsylvania after he stole the spotlight performing in the town's Fourth of July parade last weekend.

David Peters became a viral sensation almost immediately after footage of his flashy solo routine was posted on Facebook.

"This guy was the show-stopper adorned in silver," said parade viewer Joe Scassera:

Peters pranced his way down the parade route while performing his original choreography. His contagious enthusiasm, wicked skill and impressive handmade costume — a shining silver unitard — brought a huge smile to the faces of hundreds along the parade route and more than 10,000 who've shared it online.

In an interview with WTAE, Peters said he grew up with 12 brothers and sisters, and taught himself how to twirl a baton for fun when he was seven years old.

"It just stuck," Peters, a pharmacy technician, told the station. "I never got into football, I never got into sports, but [baton] entertained me."

He added: "People love it and talk about it, and that's fine but I enjoy doing it. I don't know what to say, I just enjoy what I do!"

And though he enjoys the positive reaction from the throngs of people who gathered to watch him perform live, Peters said he gets the most joy out of performing for his partner, who is battling throat cancer.

"He's the reason I do it, because it gets him to smile," he said. "And I get him out of the house, and that makes me happy seeing him happy."
