Four NFL Players to Come Out as Gay, Says Brendon Ayanbadejo

Simple arithmetic tells us that there has GOT to be a closeted sister buried in the deep, homophobic huddle that is the NFL just dying to make his manlove known.

Or two..or three...

But four?

Maybe. If our favorite (former) NFL player Brendon Ayanbadejo is right.

The outspoken LGBT ally told the Baltimore Sun Friday that the macho world of professional football, long plagued with rampant fears of gays salivating in the locker room and players obliviously slinging hate speech, might soon get a little shaken up.

"Up to four players being talked to right now and they're trying to be organized so they can come out on the same day together," he said. "It would make a major splash and take the pressure off one guy. It would be a monumental day if a handful or a few guys come out."

Ayanbadejo made the announcement during an hour-long interview that centered around his recent departure from Super Bowl championship team the Baltimore Ravens.

The former linebacker assured the paper that he was cut from the team for reasons completely separate from his LGBT activism.

Ayanbadejo has been making news with his vocal support of marriage equality and denouncements of homophobia in pro-sports since he urged Maryland voters ahead of last November's election to help pass the ballot initiative to allow same-sex marriage in the Old Line State.

When Maryland delegate Emmett C. Burns, Jr., who opposed the measure, wrote to Ravens officials asking that they "inhibit such expressions" from their employee, Ayanbadejo's team backed him publicly.

The measure ultimately passed in favor of equality, causing Burns some deserved chagrin and causing another Maryland lawmaker to run to the closest booze cruise. No word yet if either lawmaker has turned into a lustful cockmonster.

Meanwhile, we're sad to see Ayanbadejo go, but we're pretty sure he'll be sticking around to keep the ball rolling on acceptance of LGBT players in sports.

As for the group outing, Ayanbadejo seems pretty sure it's not far off.

He told the Sun: "I think it will happen sooner than you think."
