New Lee Daniels Series, "Star," Will Include A Trans Singer

The "Empire" co-creator is working on another drama set in the music industry.

Empire co-creator Lee Daniels has another music-industry series in the works: Star, about four young woman with dreams of reaching stardom and dealing with the tough choices put in front of them, has already begun casting.

Set in Atlanta, Star will offer a different perspective on the biz than Empire, though crossovers are always possible. Of course there's the Empire spin-off that Fox is hoping to have on the air later this season.

Still, the chance for Cookie to give the girls of Star some pointed advice is just too delicious to pass up.

Speaking of which, one of those four young singers will be transgender—Cotton, a biracial trans woman with a sharp fashion sense.

If Fox picks up the show, Cotton will follow in the footsteps of Glee's Unique and Coach Sheldon Bieste on the network. She'll also be a part of a broadening TV landscape that includes Sophia on Orange is the New Black and Maura Pfefferman on Transparent.

Let's hope Daniels finds the right actress to do the part justice. May we humbly suggest Mya Taylor?
