Live “Rent” Matching Donations to Broadway Cares for World AIDS Day

Valentina wants you to get tested.

’Tis the season to share the love.

In recognition of World AIDS Day today, December 1, Fox’s upcoming live musical production of Rent is matching donations to Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, up to $20,000.

BC/EFA, which was founded in 1988, has raised more than $100 million to help fund hundreds of organizations around the U.S.

A contemporary retelling of La Bohème, Rent, Jonathan Larson’s Tony Award- and Pulitzer Prize-winning musical about life and love in 1990s New York City, chronicles the struggles of bohemian East Village artists and misfits facing adulthood and gentrification.

The TV adaptation will star RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 9 fan-fave Valentina, a contestant on the upcoming All Stars Season 4, as Angel, a genderqueer street performer and drag queen who dies of complications from AIDS.

Wilson Jermaine Heredia originated Angel in the 1996 Broadway cast of Rent, earning him a Tony, and reprised the role for the 2005 movie. Wilson Cruz and Mj Rodriguez have also memorably played Angel on stage.

Brandon Victor Dixon, Emmy-nominated for his performance as Judas in Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert, will play Tom Collins, Angel’s lover. Fox’s Rent cast also includes Tinashe, Brennin Hunt, Jordan Fisher, Vanessa Hudgens, Kiersey Clemons, Mario, and Keala Settle.

Rent will be broadcast January 27, 2019, from Fox Studios in L.A.
