Freddie Smith Returning To "Days Of Our Lives" As Cherished Gay Sonny Kiriakis

"Sonny is back, and it's going to be amazing!"

When Freddie Smith debuted as Sonny Kiriakis on Days Of Our Lives in 2011, it began a groundbreaking storyline that would eventually culminate in daytime's first wedding between two men, when Sonny married love-of-his-life Will Horton.

Sadly, Will was murdered last fall, and when Smith left his Emmy-winning role last August, it left a gay void in the show that has yet to be filled.

Smith returned for a brief stay in October so Sonny could mourn Will, but with his character moving to "Europe," the door was always open for another appearance.

Indeed, back in February, Days star Vincent Irizarry tweeted a picture from the set that featured a figure in the background that looked suspiciously like Smith.

There were immediate denials, with Irizarry claiming it was merely a "lookalike stagehand," but rumors persisted. And Smith confirmed to Soap Opera Digest that he's back on set for an appearance in July.

"I am beyond excited to be returning home to Salem," he says. "Sonny is back, and it's going to be amazing!"

There's no word on how long he'll be staying, or what his storyline will be, but Sonny's former love Paul (played by Christopher Sean) is still on the show, so he may rekindle that old flame.

His return also adds fuel to the rumor that Chandler Massey is returning to resurrect Will from the always-temporary status of soap opera death.
