The co-owner of a Sacramento, California bakery said she was "shocked" by the negative reaction she got in response to a princess cake she made for a customer's birthday party this month.

Marlene Goetzeler told Fox 40 she didn't think the request was unusual because she makes a lot of "doll cakes."

As you can see in the picture posted to the Freeport Bakery Facebook page, the cake featured a Ken doll as the centerpiece, wrapped in a pink princess gown and wearing a tiara, a sash, and some jewelry.

"Naively, I guess I just thought this is a really cool cake, and look at how great they did with the butter cream,” said Goetzeler. “What's wrong with a Ken cake?"

Almost immediately, she said her business Facebook page started losing dozens of fans as the post devolved into an "LGBT debate" where critics accused the bakery of promoting "transgenderism."

"I was shocked that somebody would be offended,” she said.

The person who requested the cake declined an interview with Fox 40, but Chad Graham, who attended the party where the cake was served, said it was an absolute hit.

"Oh, I thought it was fantastic," said Graham, adding that the cake's recipient was neither transgender or trying to make a political statement.

"I thought it was a little ridiculous," he said of the faux controversy that developed online. "It was just cake."

Goetzeler said she was dismayed by the negative reaction but found comfort in the hundreds of supporters who rushed to her defense on Facebook, and even some who came into the store to say hello.

"In the beginning, I thought 'What's the big deal?'" she said. "But now I realize how important it is to take a stand if you believe in something."

In an interview with the New York Daily News, she added: "Now that I see that there’s blowback it makes me even stand firmer in being able to support people."
