The death of Leelah Alcorn brought the struggle of trans youth into American homes last December, after she walked into oncoming traffic on a stretch of Ohio's Interstate 71.

In a Tumblr post discovered after her death, Alcorn recakked the rejection she felt from her parents and her fear she'd never find happiness.

"I’m never going to be happy... There’s no winning," she wrote. "There’s no way out... People say 'it gets better' but that isn’t true in my case. It gets worse. Each day I get worse."

Now, nearly a year later, friends and supporters have funded an Adopt-a-Highway campaign in her name to maintain the stretch of freeway near where Leelah’s body was found.

Last week, the Ohio Department of Transportation acknowledged the adoption with a sign reading "in the memory of Leelah Alcorn," located along Interstate 71 near Kings Mills in Warren County.

In her note, Alcorn, 16, asked that her death "mean something": "I want someone to look at that number and say 'that’s fucked up"' and fix it. Fix society. Please."
