Is tomorrow's big release of the new Beatles Rock Band game a big deal? Er, to quote The New York Times: "The Beatles: Rock Band is nothing less than a cultural watershed, one that may prove only slightly less influential than the band’s famous appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1964... It may be the most important video game yet made." OY!

The big clincher to all this is how the Beatles Rock Game is expected to unite teen gamers and their parents (grandparents?) in a cross-generational frenzy. And this time around, if you screw up and can't play along well enough (Hey... those drums are hard to master!), you don't get booed offstage. Instead, the screen just serves you a more polite “Song failed” message.

But really, it's all about gathering friends, plowing through a bottle of red wine and getting to experience the exquisite beauty of those classic Beatles melodies, which pretty much changed the face of popular music... While your Rock Band guitar gently weeps, of course.

The big new Beatles Rock Band video game madness officially kicks off in one week (the game comes out on Sept. 9; you can pre-order it already). I've played Rock Band and looooved it. And I've got to say, I'm feeling this Beatles version. I think I'll be more into the later, trippier Beatles stuff -- "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" and "Helter Skelter" and such. Bearded Paul? Zen George? Yes, please...

Looks like you can choose to play on versions of the band's real instruments, and choose their classic venues (Abbey Road Studios, The Cavern Club, the Ed Sullivan Theater & more) to play in; and I love all the looks they offer for the Fab Four through the years.
