Gary Oldman Apologizes For Defending Alec Baldwin And Mel Gibson's Crazy: WATCH

As any Oscar-nominated actor who publicly puts his foot in his mouth but has a movie they need to promote will tell you, there's no better mea culpa than late night TV. Gary Oldman is the latest to test this theory.

The Dawn of the Planet of the Apes star stopped by Jimmy Kimmel Live where he attempted to make amends for a recent interview in Playboy wherein he defended America's sweethearts, Mel Gibson and Alec Baldwin.

"I said some things that were poorly considered. And once I had seen it in print, I could see that it was offensive, insensitive, pernicious and ill-informed," Oldman said, referring to his defense of Gibson's anti-semitic rant and Baldwin's homophobic slandering of a paparazzo.

"From my heart, I am profoundly, profoundly sorry," Oldman continued, "I should be an example and an inspiration, and I'm an asshole. And I'm 56, and I should know better."

Good for Oldman for owning up to his mistake, though if we're being real here, being 56 doesn't preclude you from saying crazy shit -- just ask Sharon Stone. Besides, Mel Gibson doesn't need any defending when he's got BFF Jodie Foster squiring him to the Golden Globes. Still waiting on an apology for that entire night, btw, Jodes.

Anyhoo, check out Gary Oldman apologizing on Jimmy Kimmel Live below:
