Gay Acrobats Get Engaged In Italy's First Televised Same-Sex Proposal
Italian TV saw its first same-sex proposal last night, when a member of acrobatic dance troupe Les Farfadais got down on one knee and presented his boyfriend with a ring live on Italia's Got Talent.
The surprise proposal came while the group was receiving critiques from the judges after performed a routine to "The Power of Love." After asking for the floor, one of the dancers turned to his boyfriend, knelt, and addressed him in English.
He said, "So we have performed tonight in a ring, and this ring has brought us together in our work, in our passion, in what we love. And I would love to know…"
The audience cheered as the boyfriend said "yes," and the judges beamed with excitement. "I swear to you, we didn't know a thing," said judge Nina Zilli, an Italian singer-songwriter. "How beautiful!"
Same-sex marriage is still illegal in Italy but a shift in that legislation could soon be on the horizon. In October, Rome's Mayor Ignazio Marino married 16 same-sex couples in defiance of Italian law, and in October, the city became the first to begin registering same-sex civil unions.
