Gay Musical “Falsettos” Sells Out, Extends Run In Movie Theaters

The Tony-nominated Broadway revival starred Andrew Rannells and Christian Borle.

Due to overwhelming demand and multiple sold-out screening locations, a filmed version of the recent Broadway revival of Falsettos will screen in more movie theaters nationwide for an extended run.

Screenvision Media, in alliance with KAOS Connect and Live From Lincoln Center, presents the Tony Award-nominated production in a limited engagement that began July 12 and will now play through July 26.

“The overwhelmingly positive response to Falsettos from audiences nationwide is a testament to this poignant and powerful show, and the exceptionally talented cast, crew and artistic staff behind it,” says Andrew C. Wilk, Live From Lincoln Center’s executive producer. “We are thrilled to add more screens and locations to enable more people to experience this very special cinema event.”

Written by William Finn and James Lapine, the 1992 musical is set at the dawn of the AIDS epidemic and centers on a neurotic man-child who creates a nontraditional family with his ex-wife, new boyfriend, adolescent son, psychiatrist, and lesbian neighbors. The Advocate called it “once innovative and now imperative.”

The 2016 Falsettos production, which was taped in January at New York City’s Walter Kerr Theatre, was nominated for five Tonys, including Best Revival of a Musical. Its four leads—Christian Borle, Andrew Rannells, Brandon Uranowitz, and Stephanie J. Block—were also nominated.

“Groundbreaking in its time, and just as relevant and resonant today, Falsettos has it all—an extraordinary cast, a story that is both funny and touching, and a spectacular score,” said Wilk in a previous statement. “Those who have never experienced Falsettos are in for a treat, and those who have seen it on stage will rediscover it through our camera’s lens.”

Falsettos is also set to be broadcast on PBS in October.
