Judge Orders Eviction Of "Nightmare" Roommate Who Harassed Gay College Student

Matthew Mansour says abuse from his roommates got worse after he came out of the closet.

A student at the University of Michigan has been granted a personal protection order after accusing his roommates of making his living situation a complete nightmare.

Matthew Mansour said that the three roommates he was assigned when he leased a student apartment destroyed his property, urinated in his dog's water bowl and taunted him after discovering he was gay.

The student said the abuse started before he even came out of the closet, though, with one of his roommates testifying in court that he didn't want to live with Mansour's therapy dog so he urinated in the pet's dish.

But after coming out as gay, Mansour says that things escalated, ending with his belongings being thrown out a window while he was away on vacation.

One of his roommates, Abhishek McFarland, testified in court last week and claimed that it was actually friends he invited over who damaged Mansour's property, according to a report by WXYZ Detroit.

Although the judge said that Mansour's sexuality can't be declared a motivating factor in the harassment since it also occurred before he came out, he did ultimately agree that the living situation was unacceptable. He issued a personal protection order against McFarland, which will result in his eviction from the apartment.

Mansour said he was relieved by the outcome and hopes it sends a message that bullying will not be tolerated, even when it's happening to adults.
