Police Department Relentlessly Bullied A Cop Because He Was Gay. And Then Fired Him

New Jersey cop Matthew Stanislao claims he was subject to daily comments and lewd gestures. One officer even mooned him.

A New Jersey police officer who claimed he was fired for being gay is receiving a $750,000 settlement and will have his job reinstated.

Matthew Stanislao alleges that, before he was terminated from the Glen Rock Police Department in October 2014, he was subjected to a hostile work environment—including homophobic comments and lewd gestures, often by superiors. Once a police officer reportedly mooned him.

Stanislao also reported he was not allowed to work with children in outreach programs, and was never recognized for his service, even after he rescued two people from a submerged car.

A lawsuit filed last falls claimed the department's conduct "was severe and pervasive enough to make a reasonable gay man believe that the conditions of employment were altered and the working environment was hostile or abusive." In exchange for dismissing his claims, Stanislao will be reinstated with back pay and will be eligible for promotions.

His attorneys state he "has been consistently focused on doing a job he loves and serving the public."

In 2014, officer Christopher McInerney was suspended without pay for exposing his buttocks to Stanislao and was demoted from sergeant. The demotion, however, was revoked the following year.
