Gay Couple Have Wedding In Pro Hockey Rink, Complete With Zamboni Cake
On their big day, Eric Pinder and Dwayne Smoot celebrated not only their love for each other, but also their shared love for ice hockey.
Decked out in matching jerseys, the couple were wed this past November at the Amway Center in Orlando, the home turf of their local hockey team the Orlando Solar Bears.
The grooms took to the ice before a home game, with a priest in a referee uniform asking them to “promise to love and cherish [each other] through power plays and penalty kills, until the final horn of life sounds.”
When the two sealed their union with a kiss, a goal horn sounded. Later, the pair celebrated with a Zamboni-shaped chocolate cake with friends and family in an arena suite.
Pinder told Outsports that the wedding theme was inspired by how the couple first met.
“We met at a party and I was wearing a Red Wings Jersey," he said. "Dwayne knew the team and player so I was impressed. Plus, he is very cute. So hockey was really our first conversation."
“When we were looking to get married, we thought that doing it before a game would be a great choice—we could get people to go see our local team, the Orlando Solar Bears," he continued. "I called our ticket rep and asked if we could get married before a game. He said, ‘Hold on,’ then three minutes later got back on the phone and said, ‘Sure, we can do that for you.’"
