Wisconsin Gay Couple Ordered to Take Down Their Pride Flag

Kevin Kollman and his partner, Merle Malterer, feel like they're "being kind of singled out" by their landlord.

A gay couple in Oak Creek, Wisconsin, is looking to take legal action after their landlord demanded that they remove a Pride flag from their property.

According to local news affiliate NBC-2, Kevin Kollman and his partner, Merle Malterer, have lived at Country Oaks Apartments for six years with minimal issues. But last Wednesday, the couple received a note from their landlord claiming they'd breached their lease and had five days to remove the rainbow flag from their property.

"Personally, I feel like we're being kind of singled out here because it's what it is," Kollman told NBC-2, noting that they were also reprimanded for hanging a Green Bay Packers flag in the past.

"[The Pride flag] is a symbol of America, it's a symbol of our pride in America being a gay couple here in Oak Creek," he added.

Kollman and Malterer's landlord claims the policy is purely aesthetic and applies to any and all flags hung by tenants at Country Oaks Apartments; however, when local reporters visited the property, they saw numerous flags at other apartments.

Their property owner told NBC-2 he doesn't want to evict them and would be open to sitting down to talk through the conflict.

Regardless, both men plan to take down their flag and are looking into taking legal action.
