Gay Couple Renews Vows On-Stage At North Carolina Edward Sharpe Concert

"We were tempted to cancel the show, but decided at the last minute to rally the crowd instead."

While many musicians have canceled shows in North Carolina in protest of the state's anti-LGBT "bathroom bill," the members of Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros took a different approach by having a gay couple renew their vows on stage.

Band frontman Alex Ebert told the crowd in Raleigh on Friday that since he had to recently miss his friends' wedding, he wanted to officiate a ceremony for them to renew their vows so he could take part in it.

He then invited PETA Senior VP Dan Mathews and his husband Jack Ryan on stage to make it all happen.

“HB2 was passed by an immoral minority – North Carolina has many thriving, creative, modern communities," Ebert told Rolling Stone. "We were tempted to cancel the show, but decided at the last minute to rally the crowd instead by renewing the vows of our good friends onstage.”
