Gay Couple Whose Wedding Was Marred By Hate Gets Second Chance At Happily Ever After

Oscar De Las Salas and Gary Jackson got a second chance to have a once-in-a-lifetime moment this weekend, two months after their dream wedding was marred by homophobic slurs.

The couple were originally married on August 17 in an intimate outdoor ceremony on Coronado Island, near San Diego. The day was progressing smoothly until a stranger began yelling phrases like “go home homos” and “go home fag.”

The unknown intruder distracted the couple and guests—and the grooms worried he might be violent. “It’s just sad that that is now ingrained for the rest of our lives in our wedding day,” said Jackson at the time. “That person took a chunk of what should have been a beautiful day and turned it into something nasty and full of hate.”

De Las Salas wrote about the unfortunate incident for Gay San Diego, and the story soon went viral. One of people who read it was Coronado resident Alisa Kerr, who decided to throw them a second wedding.

Dozens of supporters turned out, most of whom had never met De Las Salas or Jackson, and Coronado Mayor Casey Tanaka officiated over their vow renewal ceremony and gave them keys to the city. The couple also got to enjoy a second honeymoon at Lowes Coronado Bay Resort.

"It was humbling and emotional for us to meet so many of the people of Coronado, and hear their individual stories of how this incident in the park on that first wedding day and the response from the community had touched them on a personal level. We were sincerely touched," said Jackson.

Kerr told the Huffington Post her aim was to demonstrate how supportive and loving Coronado's residents are. "We are so happy we had the opportunity to share that with Oscar, Gary, and everyone else who has shown such an interest in this story," she said. "Oscar and Gary's memories of this community will now be counted among some of the happiest in their love story."
