British Politician Claims Gay Donkey Tried To Rape His Horse

John Rees-Evans has since said the statement was a bit of "playful banter."

A man running for a key leadership position in the UK Independence Party has apologized for a controversial anecdote he once told about a gay donkey trying to rape his horse.

John Rees-Evans, who is hoping to unseat Nigel Farage as the UKIP party leader, made the comment to protesters gathered outside his home when he was campaigning as a parliamentary candidate in 2014.

While most questioned Rees-Evans on his policies, one asked him to respond to a claim made by fellow candidate Julia Gasper that "some homosexuals prefer sex with animals."

After pausing for a moment to laugh, the candidate affirmed that he had "witnessed" such a thing in real life and was "quite amazed."

"I’ve got a horse and it was there in the field," he began. "My horse is a stallion, right. And a donkey came up, which was male, and I’m afraid tried to rape my horse."

“So in this case, it’s obviously correct because the homosexual donkey tried to with an animal," the politician concluded. "But I don’t think that’s what it meant, it’s just a bizarre coincidence.”

Rees-Evans was confronted with the incident on a recent segment of the BBC's Daily Politics. He (sort of) apologized for his insensitive remarks, claiming it was all a "bit of playful banter." He went on to clarify that he's "not a politician" and asked the public to "please...move on."

The candidate also made headlines by telling VICE that he once convinced staff at an IKEA in Bulgaria to let him bring a gun into the store as protection against a possible terrorist attack.

Rees-Evans is one of eight politicians vying for the role as UKIP party leader.
