Gay Erotic Artist Tom Of Finland Is Getting His Own Biopic

"This is the story of a man ahead of his time."

One of Finland's most famous exports is now getting a movie made about his life.

Artist Touko Laaksonen, better known as Tom of Finland, rose to fame as one of the most significant erotic artists of the last century.

The upcoming biopic, simply titled Tom of Finland, is set to document his path to becoming a gay icon.

The film will follow Laaksonen as he returns from World War II and finds himself persecuted for his homosexuality.

After being pressured into marrying a woman, he finds freedom in his homoerotic artwork, which eventually gains a worldwide following and helps set off a gay revolution.

"This is the story of a man ahead of his time, bravely standing up against a world virulently against his right to be who he was – a homosexual man with homosexual fantasies," director Dome Karukoski told Deadline.

"The story shows how literally one person can create change in the world, even with something as simple as an artist’s tools."

The movie is set to begin filming in the spring.
