This Gay Man Could Be Evicted From His Home Of 55 Years Because He Couldn't Legally Marry His Partner

The 85-year-old not only lost his lover, but may lose the roof over his head as well.

Tom Doyle and Bill Cornwell shared a home in New York City for 55 years during their nearly-lifelong romance, but because the couple was never legally married before Cornwell passed away two years ago, Doyle may now be kicked out on the street.

Cornwell left the apartment building to Doyle in his will, but the document is currently in dispute because its signing was only witnessed by one person and New York State requires two witnesses present in order to make it valid.

Since the couple never got around to getting married once the option finally became legal, 85-year-old Doyle is now forced to fight his late partner's nieces and nephews for the property because they are Cornwell's next of kin.

The nephews and nieces are denying that their uncle really wanted the home to go to Tom, suggesting they may have just been “friends” or “great companions," and have since put the building up for sale for over $7 million.

“I’m not so concerned about the money, I’m more concerned about a roof over my head for the rest of my life, and I wouldn’t have to be in a nursing home,” Doyle told The New York Times. “As long as I am here, I have all the familiar surroundings. It’s almost as if Bill is still here."

Doyle is currently suing the nieces and nephews in Surrogate's Court in Manhattan for the building, but says he feels like he's losing control of his own life.

“It’s as if I’ve been deserted," he said about the people he had considered his extended family. “I don’t hate them, but they are fighting over what is legally mine and Bill’s."
