"Gay Fighter Supreme” Video Game Brings Queer Flavor To “Street Fighter” World

More and more video games are including LGBT characters, but now we have one we can call our own: Gay Fighter Supreme has just been released on iTunes, Windows and Google Play.

In the game, a 2D fighter in the vein of Street Fighter,  over-the-top queer characters like twink Timmy Spears, leather bear Bardwell, lesbian Sappho Ethridge and drag queen Carrie Cupcake duke it out to be named "Gay Fight Champion.”

They also battle Ford Jacobs, Maxx 2.0 and other members of the League of Oppressive Self-Righteous Zealots (LOSRZ).

“The idea for Gay Fighter Supreme arose from banter between friends discussing our mutual love for 90’s fighting games,” says creator Michael Patrick. “The characters are all influenced by dated jokes, pop culture icons, and camp. We wanted it to be like a pride parade gone rogue.”

We first reported on Gay Fighter Supreme in 2013, but it's finally available for download. And while it’s definitely not PC, the game’s developers say that’s kind of by design.

“Anyone who mistakenly views the game as offensive or feels it perpetuates gay stereotypes is missing the point,” explains co-creator Melchor Cardenas. “It’s pure satire. We don’t mean to offend anyone. If it does, we hope it inspires them to create a fun queer-themed game of their own.”

Well, the gauntlet has been thrown.
