Gay Filmmaker Marks Broken Engagement With Inspiring 3,600 Mile Walk Across America

The journey only took eight months but the film has been a four-year process.

A man who walked over 3,600 miles across America after he and his fiancee broke off their engagement is turning his journey into a film detailing the life lessons he learned along the way, called The Road Less Traveled By.

AJ Goodrich began his eight month journey walking from his home in Venice Beach to his boyfriend's in New York City in 2011. The idea began as a cute way for the couple to highlight their upcoming nuptials, but after the couple broke up and called off the wedding, Goodrich decided to follow through with the trip.

Flanked by a crew of rotating friends (save one, his best friend Mark Metivier, who made the whole journey with him), Goodrich documented the trip while "talking to people along the way about same-sex marriage and queer identity in America."

On an Indiegogo campaign launched to raise $35,000 toward the film's completion, Goodrich writes:

Over the course of they journey, they encountered all sorts of people, and a range of rarely seen perspectives, from an Islamic gravedigger in the middle of the Mojave Desert to a roadhouse cook in Arizona and stewards of a radical queer commune in New Mexico. Each day held a unique new adventure and incredible people to meet, share stories with, and interview.

What started as a grassroots civil rights march exploring equality and LGBT identity grew into a deeply personal coming-of-age story, and an unexpected look into the true nature of love, friendship -- and what's really important in life.

The funds requested in Goodrich's crowdsourcing campaign will aide in post-production, and contributors can snatch a variety of perks that range from a copy of the film to a trip to the private premiere screening.

If all goes according to plan, Goodrich plans to submit The Road Less Traveled By to major film festivals in 2016. Check out the first teaser trailer below.
