The 13 Most Homoerotic Horror Movies Of All Time

We hack into the gayest horror movies.

Halloween is the perfect time of year to watch a horror movie. And if you can find a little gay subtext in your fright flick, so much the better.

Below, we hack through our 13 favorite homoerotic horror movies.

13. Hostel

In Eli Roth's 2005 breakout slasher flick, backpacking American Josh (Derek Richardson) clearly has a crush on his buddy Paxton (Jay Hernandez). When the guys have a foursome in creepy Slovakia, it's Pax Josh can't keep his eyes off of.

Not that we blame him, mind you.

Sadly, Josh's heteroflexibility leads to his falling prey to a Dutch psychopath with a surgical fetish.

Nope, there's nothing homoerotic about this movie poster.

12. The Covenant

What up, wee-otch? This 2006 all-boy ripoff of The Craft is worth watching for a bumper crop of surly, shirtless himbos who don't seem to pay much attention to girls.

Fun trivia: Covenant's cast included future stars Taylor Kitsch, Chace Crawford and Sebastian Stan.

11. The Lost Boys

Gay director Joel Schumacher's ode to eternal puberty is more than just a little queer: Just count the lingering stares between new arrival Michael (Jason Patric) and vampire leader Kiefer Sutherland as Jamie Gertz hovers in the background.

It doesn't help that Sutherland's vampire gang look like backup dancers in an Adam and the Ants video.

Meanwhile Michael's little brother, Sam (Corey Haim), definitely reads like a little gayling, what with his sexy Rob Lowe poster, daring wardrobe choices and bathtub showtunes.

10. American Psycho

Getting to gazing upon the chiseled delights of Christian Bale for 90 minutes mostly made up for the gorier parts in this expose of  '80s-era excess and narcissism.

And when a closeted gay guy hits on Patrick, he actually lets him go. Um... progress?

9. Friday the 13th: Jason Goes to Hell

While several of the Friday the 13th flicks boast queer themes, none is quite as homoerotic—or insane—as Jason Goes to Hell.

In one scene, a character possessed by Jason ties up another man and shaves off all his body hair, before French kissing him and inserting the Jason parasite into his mouth. (Not that there's anything wrong with that.)

Director Adam Marcus said he included the scene because previous Friday the 13th installments were somewhat sexist and he wanted to make sure there was equal amounts of male and female nudity.

Well, okay then!

8. The Talented Mr. Ripley

While some people would bristle at calling this star-studded hit a "horror movie," it's essentially the story of a sinister wannabe (Matt Damon) who kills off any dude he finds himself attracted to.

Iincluding his best friend, Dickie (Jude Law).

And potential boyfriend Peter (Jack Davenport).

7. The Forsaken (2001)

Stuffed with '90s Hollywood hunks, this horror flick/road movie flick is really an education video about bromances gone bad: Dawson's Creek star Kerr Smith plays a hapless rube who unwisely invites Roswell's Brendan Fehr on a cross-country road drive.

But it turns out Fehr is actually a vampire hunter intent on staking bloodsucking man candy like Simon Rex (Jack & Jill) and Johnathon Schaech (Models, Inc.)

How gay is The Forsaken? There's the Abercrombie-level cast, a "blood disorder" metaphor, and all the longing looks.

The damsel in distress (Izabella Miko) is mostly ignored for the 10 minutes she appears onscreen.

And then there's the director's obsession with phallic symbols.

6. Fear No Evil

There's no way around it: Fear No Evil is bananas. The low-budget indie horror features an impalement by crucifix, the Son of Satan in a diaphanous Bob Mackie gown, and music by The Boomtown Rats.

How gay is it? Our demon-spawn "hero" Andrew is assaulted in the gym showers by a bully—who pins him down and kisses him while both are naked.

No worries, our hero gets his revenge... by magically giving the bully breasts.

5. Interview with a Vampire

Sure, Neil Jordan's 1994 adaptation of the Anne Rice novel doesn't quite have the scream-queen factor as some of the other films on this list, but there was plenty of blood.

As well as Tom Cruise sucking on Brad Pitt.

4. Jeepers Creepers 2

Set shortly after the end of the first Jeepers Creepers, this beefcake-filled sequel sees a busload of high-school basketball players being picked off by a winged monster with a taste for hairless twinks.

How gay is it? Well, we lost Justin Long in the first Creepers movie, but we got smoldering Al Santos as a consolation prize.

Plus, there's the whole "horny, shirtless basketball players on a bus" thing. (You're welcome, BTW).

Even the way the monster kills and devours his hunky victims is kinda gay.

All the kids assume sensitive teen Izzy is gay—earning him the nickname "Izzy or Isn't He?"

Who pulls their pants all the way down to pee in a field?!?

3. Witchboard

As Linda, Tawny Kitaen was ostensibly the allure in this Ouija-board PSA from the mid-80s, but it's really all about the simmering sexual tension between Linda's boyfriend, Jim (Todd Allen), and her ex Brandon (soap actor Stephen Nichols).

We learn the boys were once very close.

After Brandon pulls out a Ouija board at Jim and Linda's party, the body count starts racking up—including Jim's flamboyant buddy, Lloyd.

And there's the butch medium Brandon invites to banish the demon haunting their forbidden love.

"Once you accept the true gay romance story and relegate the whole evil 'witchboard" nonsense to the sidelines, the film is an incredibly compelling watch," writes the queer horror site Camp Blood. "Every scene is one shot short of being straight-up gay romance."

2. Fright Night

In this horror-comedy, vampire Jerry Dandrige (Chris Sarandon) actually goes undercover in the suburbs as an antiques dealer with a hunky carpenter boyfriend.

Along the way he develops an unusual fixation with teenage neighbor, Charlie.

And seduces Charlie's outcast friend Ed (future gay porn star Stephen Geoffreys).

And we haven't even gotten to closeted actor Roddy McDowall as the effeminate vampire hunter.

Or future Hollywood power lesbian Amanda Bearse, who plays Charlie's virginal girlfriend. (She and Charlie aren't having sex, which is oddly fine with both of them.)

1. A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge

It's hard to believe the producers of Freddy's Revenge when they say they had no idea gay screenwriter David Chaskin infused the film with more gay subtext than a season of Teen Wolf.

We're talking naked teen horseplay.

innuendo-laden bromances.

gay-bar dream sequences.

a gym teacher getting whipped in the locker room showers.

And angsty adolescent Jesse (gay actor Mark Patton) screaming about how "something is trying to get inside my body!"

In fact, the documentary Scream, Queen: My Nightmare On Elm Street examines the film's rich gay subtext.
