To assess the differences between online dating apps designed for gay men and lesbian women, a group of four queer co-workers paired off into two male-female couples to trade apps and try to find one another dates.

The experiment was launched by BuzzFeed and saw each guy in the pair download the lesbian dating app "Her" with each girl downloading "Grindr." They then made a profile for their partner and spent the week chatting up the app's users to try and score them a date.

Though each app requires a picture and a short bio to make an account, that's where the similarities end, according to these participants.

For Jameson and Jared, the boys in the experiment, the most striking difference between the two apps was that the women they met on Her were more willing to engage in conversation than any men they'd ever met on Grindr. However, while the conversation tended to flow and didn't include any Grindr-esque physical-shaming, it was almost too involved and didn't seem to go anywhere.

In direct contrast to this finding, Brittany and Rachel were shocked at the dearth of communication on Grindr. Since neither Jameson nor Jared had provided their female counterparts with nudes, the ladies were never able to maintain any sort of back-and-forth as most people they spoke with were solely interested in hooking up.
