Gay Play Cancels Shows Because It Can’t Compete With “Drag Race”

Off-Broadway hit "Afterglow” saw ticket sales slump on Thursday nights.

If you can’t beat ’em, join 'em in front of the television.

The off-Broadway play Afterglow, nearing its one-year anniversary this summer, has rearranged its regular performance schedule to avoid competing with new episodes of RuPaul's Drag Race.

“We were seeing sold-out shows on Wednesdays and Fridays, with our always popular Thursday nights suddenly seeing a steep reduction in ticket sales," Afterglow writer and director S. Asher Gelman explains. "We quickly realized that the ‘culprit,’ so to speak, was RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars."

"With the approach of the highly anticipated 10th season of the hit show, we took a page from BenDeLaCreme and elected to 'sashay away' from Thursday nights, opting to perform on Tuesdays instead until Drag Race ends in June," Gelman continues.

“Besides, Monét X Change is a friend and a big fan of our show; I don’t think any of us would want to compete with her!”

Gelman explores gay polyamory in his sensual drama about a married couple in an open relationship who begin sleeping with a massage therapist. Things get messy and very naked, so it’s a good thing there’s a working shower onstage.

“When a new intimate connection begins to form, all three men must come to terms with their individual definitions of love, loyalty, and trust as futures are questioned, relationships are shaken, and commitments are challenged,” reads an official synopsis of the play.

NewNowNext called the show “stimulating” and its three stars “ballsy.”

Afterglow, an official sponsor of this year’s AIDS Walk in New York, runs through July 1 at the Loft at the Davenport Theatre.

RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 10 airs Thursdays at 8/7c on VH1.
