Gay Storylines, Personalities Nab Daytime Emmy Nominations

The 2014 Daytime Emmy nominations were announced Thursday morning, and gay soap fans have reason to rejoice: Chandler Massey, who played gay 20something Will Horton on Days of Our Lives, nabbed a nomination for Outstanding Younger Actor in a Drama Series. (The show itself is up for Outstanding Drama).

Massey (above) has previously won two Daytime Emmys for playing Horton, but left Days last year under controversial circumstances, and was replaced by actor Guy Wilson. In early April, the character married boyfriend Sonny Kiriakis (Freddie Smith) in daytime's first same-sex wedding between two men.

The web soap Venice The Series was nominated for Outstanding New Approaches: Drama Series, and centers on Gina Brogno, a lesbian interior designer living in Venice Beach. The show's producer and star, Crystal Chappell, previously played lesbian character Olivia Spencer on Guiding Light.  "There have been such great people who have come into my life because of this experience," says Chappell. "The fans have shared their stories with me honestly and openly. I want to keep telling their story."

In the world of talk shows Good Morning America—which featured out anchors Robin Roberts and Sam Champion (before he departed for the Weather Channel)—is up for Outstanding Morning Program. Ellen Degeneres is up for Outstanding Talk Show, as is the Talk, which is executive produced by and co-stars out personality Sara Gilbert.
