Gay Teen In India Reportedly Raped By His Mother To "Cure" Him Of Homosexuality
A gay teen in India claims he was forced to have sex with his mother to "cure" him of his homosexuality, according to the LGBT Collective, a rights group in southern India.
"Corrective rape" is an all-too-common practice in some countries, but this is the first report of a parent carrying out such an assault.
The Collective says 15 corrective rapes have been reported in the last five years, but many victims avoid going to the authorities because of the shame and trauma involved.
"We came across such cases not because they reported the rape, but because they sought help to flee their homes," Collective member Vyjayanti Mogli told the Times of India. It's usually a cousin who's roped in for this 'project.'"
The stigma surrounding gays and lesbians in India is reinforced by the country's legal system: In 2013, the Supreme Court decriminalized homosexuality, reversing a 2009 legal decision.
