GaysOverCovid Goes From Instagram to "Good Morning America"

Your fave follow just made its national television debut.

GaysOverCovid has traveled from your social media feed to national television.

The popular Instagram account calling out gay men who attend massive, mask-less circuit parties during the ongoing pandemic made it all the way to Good Morning America. This Tuesday, January 5, the ABC news program covered the growing trend of "COVID vigilantes" on social media.

While GaysOverCovid wasn't specifically named in the segment, GMA showed the account's feed and reported that it has amassed more than 100,000 followers in just a few days. At the timing of writing, the account has 106,000 followers.

Over the weekend, Todd Masterson, a.k.a. GayFatFriend, posted a viral Instagram video noting the difference between shaming and accountability when it comes to calling out these reckless revelers. Masterson repeated his point on GMA, saying, "Pointing out people doing bad things or people doing things we consider wrong isn't shame; it's accountability."

"I know that a lot of people had plans to go to Mexico... and they saw how the internet was treating people who broke quarantine, and they canceled all those plans," he added.

In addition to photos of the partiers, GMA showed video footage of the sinking of a party boat off the coast of Puerto Vallarta this past weekend. The segment also noted how many people's travel plans are being discovered because they forgot to disable location tracking on their social media accounts or mobile devices. Whoops.
